YouTube TV brings “Multiview” feature to watch multiple streams at once: Learn more
YouTube TV is launching a new “multiview” feature that allows subscribers to watch multiple streams at once. Initially, only certain users living in the US will be able to access multi-screen with TV devices.
During early access, some members will begin to see the option to watch up to four different pre-selected streams at once in the “Most Popular For You” section.
After selecting multi-view, viewers can switch audio and subtitles between streams and switch in and out of full-screen view of the game.
“Multiview joins our lineup of features for sports fans, and we look forward to continuing to improve the experience and introduce it to all YouTube TV subscribers over the coming months,” YouTube wrote in a blog post.
“We’ve been thinking about how we can offer this feature for some time. Typically, multi-viewing requires a high-powered device, which means it’s often limited to users with specific hardware,” it said.
According to YouTube, when building this feature, the goal was to make sure it was available to users on all TVs, regardless of their equipment.
“We moved the processing requirements to YouTube’s servers. This allows all subscribers to use the feature regardless of their home devices, because when it’s streamed to them, their device only sees one live feed instead of two or four,” said German Cheung, director of design for YouTube TV.
“Instead of building something completely new from scratch, we could use the content already created by the Live team and make changes from there to the YouTube TV platform and bring the feature to market faster,” added Cheung.
It also brings new opportunities to make the live experience even better for content producers and opens the door to new features, such as adding comments to videos.
The streaming giant said that it will gradually introduce multi-view and collect feedback from subscribers along the way. YouTube has also confirmed the access date for NFL Sunday Ticket, which will begin on September 10.
“Over time, we will improve and add multiview functionality, including the ability to customize your own multiview streams,” the company said.
